HOW TO CLEAN HOT TUB FILTERS

Hot tub filters are an essential feature of a Lay‑Z‑Spa pump as they filter out dirt and grime, so your hot tub’s water stays clean and healthy. They also prevent this debris from getting into the pump and heater which would otherwise have the potential to cause damage and reduce its lifespan.

How Do Hot Tub Filters Work?

Hot tub filters work in conjunction with your hot tub’s pump. As the main part of any spa’s circulation system, the pump pulls water from the hot tub, pushing it through the filter, before returning the newly filtered water into the hot tub.

Inside the filter housing, the filter cartridge itself is made up of lots of strands of pleated paper. It is this pleated paper that captures all the debris and strains out impurities which can be visibly seen upon its surface once removed from the housing.

Hot tub filters work by catching dirt and grime when the water is pumped through them. As your pump will usually be continuously cleaning and filtering the water when it is turned on, this dirt can quickly build up, especially when the hot tub is regularly used.

How Often Should I Clean Or Replace My Hot Tub Filters?

Between each use or at least every other day you should remove the filter cartridge from its filter housing and clean them. Every few weeks depending on the intensity of your hot tub use, old filters should be replaced with new ones (especially when they become harder and discoloured).

The more often you use your hot tub the more often you should clean and replace your filters. It is important to shower before every use of your Lay‑Z‑Spa to wash off natural oils that accumulate on your body as well as any deodorants, moisturisers etc. This will help your filters to last longer, reduce the quantity of chemicals that you need to use on treating the spa and also increase the lifetime of your pump.

How Do I Clean Hot Tub Filters?

We recommend always having a spare spa filter available. This will mean you can use one filter while the other one is being washed ready for its next use. To extend the lifespan of the filter, follow these simple steps:

1 Rinse the debris from the filter with a hose before the filter dries
2 Allow the filters to dry thoroughly
3 Shake to remove loose particles from the filter’s fabric
4 Fill a clean plastic bucket, large enough to completely immerse the filter with clean water
5 Add 1 litre of ClearWater Filter Cartridge Cleaner for every 20 litres of water in the bucket
6 Carefully immerse the filter in the solution and allow it to soak overnight or for at least 8 hours
7 Remove the filter from the solution and rinse thoroughly with fresh water

For best results allow the filter to dry before placing back into the hot tub’s filter housing

What Happens If I Don’t Clean My Hot Tub’s Filter?

Failure to wash out your filters can result in them becoming clogged and ineffective which will ultimately constrict water flow. This will put extra strain on the pump motor and potentially cause a mechanical breakdown. Poor filter care and maintenance is the number one cause of pump/heater failure so making sure that you have a clean filter and spares to hand are essential!
